Allotments

Allotments are plots of land that people rent so they can grow their own food. They play a vital role in connecting people to the process of food production enabling to grow fresh, cheap food. This reduces the need for food that has been transported over long distances, cutting down on 'food miles', lowering carbon emissions- a win for both the wallet and environment.

They also create space for people to get outdoors and be active, which is great for physical and mental health. They're a hub for community interaction, where gardeners can meet, swap advice, share surplus crops, and learn from each other. This sense of community helps build stronger social networks and promotes a culture of sharing and collaboration.

On top of all that, allotments encourage sustainable practices like composting food waste, collecting rainwater and growing a diverse range of plants to support local biodiversity. Allotment holders contribute to healthier soils, habitats and a greener more resilient environment.

There are 18 council run allotment sites and many more in Doncaster run by allotment associations.
