Electric Vehicles (EVs)
What are Electric Vehicles (EVs)?
EV is a catch all term for a few different types of vehicles, below is a list of the vehicles included when we say EVs ranked in order of best to worst for the environment:
- Batter Electric Vehicles (BEVs): These are fully electric vehicles with rechargeable batteries and no internal combustion engine.
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): These vehicles have a battery that can be recharged by plugging in, but also have an internal combustion engine for longer trips.
- Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs): These vehicles have an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, which uses energy stored in a battery. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and by an internal combustion engine, it isn't plugged in to charge.
Did you know?
Transport is the largest emitting sector of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, making up 40% of Doncaster's carbon emissions alone. Moving to electric vehicles will help reduce these emissions significantly. What are the benefits of EVs?
User benefits
- Generally cheaper to maintain over the lifetime of the vehicle
- They are futureproof- the government has plans to ban the sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines in the near future
- Generally cheaper to run than petrol or diesel cars- particularly if you charge them at home on a slow charge
Societal benefits
- Extremely quiet so reduces noise pollution
- Significantly better for the environment as they produce no exhaust pipe emissions
Why is it important that we develop infrastructure for EVs now?
It is important that EV infrastructure is implemented before the demand for EVs increases substantially so society is prepared for EVs. Consider this, if petrol station were only built after everyone had purchased petrol cars, then how would they all run?
Ultimately, we know that one of the main concerns preventing people purchasing EVs are the limited charging options. To be able to cope with the increase in EVs it is imperative that we develop the infrastructure needed for EVs now so they become more convenient than petrol and diesel cars currently are and we alleviate the concern of limited charging provision.
What is the Council's role in EV charging provision?
Doncaster Council want to champion the transition to EVs for all living, working, visiting Doncaster, therefore we are investing heavily in EV charging provision across the city for all to use.
EV infrastructure in Doncaster
Doncaster is home to numerous EV charging points for the public to use, including charge points in council owned carparks.
Aside from council owned assets, there are many private chargers on offer in Doncaster. The best place to learn more about these is on the ZAPMAP website.
