How to make your home more energy efficient

Improving the energy efficiency of your home not only benefits the environment by reducing the amount of heat lost through poor insulated areas, but also makes your home more cost effective to run and more comfortable to live in. Often, these measures are called retrofitting, "the process of making improvements to your home so it becomes more energy efficient with lower emissions."

Did you know- Our homes use 35% of the UK's energy and emit 20% of our carbon dioxide emissions. By 2050, all homes in the UK, built pre-1990, will need to be refurbished with energy efficiency measures, that is approximately 20 million homes.

What can I do?

Below are some example of measures you could add to your home, in the order they should be done in, with the first measures at the top, and last at the bottom.

Low to no cost measures

  • Install LED lights
  • Bleed your radiators
  • Turn radiators down (not off!) in rooms you use less
  • Keep doors shut
  • Close curtains/blinds in the evenings and night
  • Install a letter-box draught excluder
  • Install reflective radiator panels to prevent heat being lost through the walls behind the radiator and instead reflect it back into the room
  • Have thick, lined curtains and close them in the evenings and early mornings

Building fabric

  • Upgrading windows and doors- for example, double or triple glazing
  • Insulating and ventilating the property correctly with wall, floor and roof insulation

Building services

  • Upgrade your heating system- this could be to a heat pump or a biomass boiler

Renewable technologies

  • Installing solar PV and battery storage
